Type of a scam Business Email Compromise

Received an email saying the company named Gruppo Ferrero S.p.A. is hiring people. Then arranged a phone call interview with their HR. They provided a believable contract along job description for a 1099 job as researcher and contractor with their clients. Then after you confirm with the job. You are contacted by a so-called personal manager both email and cell. They ask me to do research on the local market while at the same time waiting for a check from their clients. The manager asked me to deposit the check and claim it as a personal check. That is when I find it to be suspicious. So I soon took all the checks to the bank and let them check for creditability.
