Type of a scam Fake Check/Money Order

I got an email about a job offer for a personal assistant through my school email. It seemed like a fairly ok job, just fetching mail and running small errands while she was out of the state. This is not uncommon so I inquired about the position and they seemed very professional and the job was outlined in the email. They immediately texted me and overnighted a check to me for $1,250. That is where the red flags came. The texts were weird and unprofessional and told me to deposit the check into my account immediately after receiving. I inquired about meeting for the position in person and they just kept persisting that I deposit the funds and wait for further instruction. I knew about similar scams so I did not deposit the check. I looked up the information on the check and the "business" was a dentist office in MI. The mailing address itself was from a weird part of CA.
