Type of a scam Advance Fee Loan

My wife received a cold call from GOBANK telling her she was eligible for a $25,000 loan. Since I was not involved in the loan I do not have all the information on the calls, demands and terms they told her, but I do know she was required to keep sending them money to secure the loan, pay for loan insurance, and then–since her credit was bad–had to pay more to secure the loan. All in all, she wound up sending them $2,700. Thankfully she was able to get the money back, even after they threatened that she was going to lose all of it if she cancelled the loan.

Now these scammers (read "confidence tricksters," because that is what they are) have her name, Social Security Number, date of birth, address, and her legitimate bank account number. They tried to "deposit" a check into her legit bank account using the bank’s mobile deposit app, but our bank called my wife to confirm if she did. The bank told us they have seen thousands of people who have been scammed by GOBANK and what these scammers will do is, even after people have paid for their loan and given them all their personal information, they will then deposit funds into your bank account, wait a couple of days, and then withdraw the money. Of course the funds deposited are fraudulent/bogus, and when they withdraw the money the funds deposited will bounce, thus leaving the account holder responsible to pay back what was deposited. But it gets better! They will not do this scam once, but numerous times. Our bank told us they have seen people who had this happen to them multiple times and wind up having thousands of dollars taking out of their account.

If you have been scammed by GOBANK, then you MUST do the following:

Close all your bank accounts

Close all debit/credit cards

Change ALL your passwords! (this means ALL, because GOBANK will phish your information on all financial institutions, social media sites, e-mail, etc)

Contact all the credit reporting agencies to put a freeze on your information so no one will be able to open accounts under your name

I received a call from someone claiming to be from Gobank and they told me that I could get a $5,000 loan but I had to go to Walmart to get a Gobank card and deposit $254 on the card so they could put money on the account. I said Ok. Then they told me my credit score wasn’t high enough for the loan, so they told me to put another $350 on the card because they said they had to purchase insurance for the loan. Then after I did that, they said that there were a number of other Mike Evan’s in the Cleveland area, and that I didn’t tell them that, and so they wanted to charge me another $350 because "I didn’t tell them that". That’s when I finally told them no, I was not doing that, and I asked for my money back and they said no, they will not give me my money back. I checked the balance of my Gobank cards, and there is nothing left. They wiped them clean.
