Type of a scam Employment

My 18 year old son was looking for a job on Indeed.com and was contacted by a  man named Eric Hope who called him from 812-682-0570. The email he sent includes a picture. He told him it would be a sales job. He asked how old he was and if he was in school. He was told to go to the library and print off check and deposit it into his account, which he did. The status was pending for a couple of days. The scammer contacted him again and said they would mail him a check. He was to use the money to buy a computer, printer etc to work from home. A check arrived from UPS for $3000.00. I would not let him deposit it.
