Received a letter and Check for $7990.90 saying the check was… "deducted from your winnings. The purpose of this check is to enable you pay for tax, insurance, shipping and handling on your winnings." Noticed that no where on the letter is my name (the winner). Check did have my name and the name of a grocery store chain not even in my state nor the state of the Lottery company. Also, the zip code information for the business the check was from was not correct (four digits instead of a five digit zip code for US addresses). Also noted, if a legitimate business were to send a check in the mail for $7990.90, would not they have their return address on the envelope and not just a plain envelope with a regular postage stamp?

The letter itself has too many cut and paste font differences, especially the phone number you are to call.

The "check" itself is the type you can get at a office supply store and print any information you want on it. Did a look-up of the business name on the check and called their corporate offices, they know nothing about it and the check is not from them. The routing numbers were not even for the bank that was indicated on the check. The check indicated Wells Fargo, but Wells Fargo said those are not their bank numbers and they do not have any accounts with those numbers.

Received a letter in the mail in my previous married name saying I had won some sort of Lottery with a certified check attached in the amount of $7,990.90 deducted from my winnings of $500,000. to enable me to pay for the tax, insurance, shipping and handling on my winnings. Of course, I know this is bogus. Reporting to warn other consumers. Your form here does not allow me to attach 2 items so I will attach a copy of the certified check and will send the letter under another email to your office/

Received a letter in the mail along with a check for $7990.90. The letter stated that she had won in an international general market survey and that they received the entry slip attached to my name. Letter claims she was entitled to $500,000 prize payable to her by certified check that would be delivered by their special courier company. It then states that the included check is to be deducted from her winnings to cover certain fees leaving a balance of $492,009.10.

The letter then states to call her claim agent and lists a number. It then notes not to act on the letter until you speak with your agent.

Called the number over the weekend and was put through to a voicemail that wasn’t set up. Called the bank the check was drafted on (Valley National Bank) and they refused to validate the check over the phone to a third party saying to go in to a branch ( have none local). Called the number again on a Monday and the agent that answered advised to deposit the check into checking account and call back the next day for additional instructions. Agent also advised not to show claim documents to anyone as it would void the claim.

Did not deposit the check. Felt the agents instructions and banks refusal to verify the check were not normal.
