I was contacted by “Amos Jackson” and he said I was reviewed via Indeed by HR of his company and I met their requirements and has been selected for an online interview with “Mr Aaron Piercing”. I already had red flags with miss spelled words and an “online interview”. Mr Aaron Piercing asked me a few background questions and then said he will send our chat to HR to see if I qualified. He came back a few minutes and said I was hired. The position would be a work from home situation with COVID still a concern – at $32.00 per hour! They would send me a check to purchase necessary materials and equipment for the home office, W4 and contract. VERY SUSPICIOUS at this point!

Two days later I received this letter and check and new right away this was FAKE! When I asked about W4 and contract he said that will all happen after I purchase my equipment. I knew then that this equipment purchase would draw off my account immediately before the bank could actually draw funds from the fraudulent check. Had I gone through with this, and the check came back fraudulent, the preferred vendor would have the money, and I would have been screwed out of $3850.00.

Shame on these people for screwing with innocent families, especially given the times we are in. Be extremely careful right now and listen to your feelers.

Type of a scam Fake Check/Money Order

I was contacted by a company recruiter that said they got my contact/work history from an employment site. They asked for an informal Google Hangouts chat to talk about my background and performed a weak interview. They said they were interested in my background and qualifications. The position would be a work from home situation with COVID still a concern – at $32.00 per hour!! They would send me a check to purchase necessary materials and equipment for the home office. They had my contact info from the employment service and would forward the check there. SUSPICIOUS! I had written this off as a scam.

A day later, I received a number of text messages asking if I had received the check – from different phone numbers. When I got the cashiers check I called the institution to verify funds. The account number was fake. The scammers sent the check via FedEx and tracked the delivery. They needed me to deposit my check and order my equipment and materials from their preferred vendor immediately so I could begin training immediately – which they would pay me $27.50 per hour for. I assume this equipment purchase would draw off my account immediately before the bank could actually draw funds from the fraudulent check. Had I gone through with this, and the check came back fraudulent, the preferred vendor would have the money, and I would have been on the hook for $3850.00.

I lost my job a week ago. I signed up with a state employment website as a requirement of unemployment. These folks are preying on the desperate with a promise of an opportunity to provide for their families during a pandemic – which makes the scam all the more convincing as many places are not doing face to face interviews. Also, the possibility of employment without the stress of engaging the public is enticing at this time. Be careful folks
