I responded to an ad on craigslist and they said I had to have accredit report run thru a certain company. The charge was $1.00 but it all sounded too weird, therefore, I am submitting a report.

CreditUpdates.com is having their employees post fake rental ads all over Craigslist.com. The prospective renter is told to print out a "free" $1 credit report and bring it the next day to the "showing of the property". However, there is no property, and if the person does not cancel membership within a week, their credit card is charged $30 a month. No one on the support staff is available to cancel the account before a week expires. They do not answer you unless 7 days have passed. They purposefully let a week go by so the innocent renter is forced to pay $31 to hopefully view an apartment that doesn’t even exist.

– Please note that no address is given in the ads, but I have lived in my town for 26 years and I drove by 3 different properties listed by CreditUpdates.com because I recognized them from the pictures and I left notes with my phone number. 2 tenants called me back and were very upset that I thought their apartments were up for rent.

Prospective renters click on the ads which have legitimate pictures stolen from Zillow.com, reply to it, and are emailed back the following email, or one very similar to it:

"Hi ***,

Thank you for your interest in the property listed for rent. You were the second to e-mail from the ad. The first prospective renter no longer had to move because of his home situation. So we give the opportunity to you. We are currently ready to lease with flexible terms and just completed all new renovations. We will work with you on move in date, lease length and security deposit.

I know that you need the exact address of the property but we do want not to divulge the address before you are qualified. We have had a string of break-ins, squatters and thefts at our other properties. We would like to avoid that with this property due to the renovations that have cost plenty of money. You will be the first to move in with the renovations.

All utilities are priced into the lease along with garage parking spaces. The appliances in the kitchen as well as laundry room were just installed. You have the option to pick your paint color and flooring before your arrival

Type of a scam Phishing

I was searching for an apartment on craigslist and I contacted the person through email at [email protected] I received an email at 11:00 PM. MST on Tuesday, August 25, 2015. That email gave me a link to get my credit report for the apartment. I used that sight and put all my personal information on it. It then informed me to call a number to unlock my report. I gave them my name, social security number, etc. over the phone.
