They call, asking if they have the correct business name. I said, yes, because we sometimes get calls like that for people wanting to make sure they’ve called the right company. Then the man on the other line starts asking a slew of questions like, "are you still at XYZ address?" which prompted me to ask "who am I speaking with?" and he said "Warren, with the Chamber of Commerce, updating our directory for libraries, etc." I had no idea this was a scam, I guess when I heard library I thought must be okay. So he further asked for manager name, and amount of employees. Really didn’t think it was a big deal, they weren’t super personal questions. Then after some pleasantries, we hung up. But after the whole ordeal it felt weird…so of course when I googled it, all this scam info popped up.

Man with a strong Indian accent called saying hes with the chamber of commerce and hes calling to confirm our business information. He ask is your company still such and such, is your address still such and such, Do you still have 10 employees, then asked what’s the manager’s name, when I asked who do you have down as the manager? He said no one, what’s the managers name? I said that’s funny that you have all this other info and no manager name, who did you say you were again? He hung up the phone.

Answer the phone repeating my usual business greeting multiple times through static, then music and a woman with a heavy accent answers. During verification questions, I continually answered it is because of a ‘yes’ scam I was aware of. When I questioned why they were asking for the information, they simply stated they were updating the Chamber of Commerce’s listing. Our local chamber has been contracting with a firm for a directory, so I gave them limited information.

The person on the phone, a female, asked if this is Snow River. I answered ‘yes’. She then asked if my address is 405 N. Fourth Avenue. I answered ‘yes’. She then asked how many employees I have. I answered zero. She asked for my name, I then asked her why she was asking me these questions, her answer was she is with the Chamber of Commerce and is updating my business profile. She then asked for my name again and what my position is within the business, I hung up at this point.

A person called a business and asked to confirm the address. Then asked what is the name of the owner. He said he is calling from Chamber of Commerce and wanted to know the name of the company’s owner. When I told him we have never gotten a phone call like this before he said that’s okay and hung up. After the phone call I googled to see if other people have other calls like this and businesses have gotten calls inquiring personal information that has later been used for identity theft or they have used it to create false invoices.
