Type of a scam Employment

I have been looking for a part time and job and have probably been tracked on one of the sites. I received an email about same and having done secret shopper work before (LEGITIMATELY) and for a marketing company, I responded with my name and address. I received a badly written, grammatially incorrect letter with suspicious instructions and a check made out to me for $2900; the check had RE: Cerissa C. Hinson on it.

The letter was signed by someone called Mark Carter. I was supposed to deposit the check, keep $400 for my work, purchase gift cards for e-bay and take pictures of them etc. The check was from St. Louis Community Credit Union. I called to alert them, but I was 17th in line to have my call answered, so I gave up. The return address for the priority mail package I received was in Carolina, Puerto Rico. The name used on the address was Shantel Nelson. This scam targets both indivuduals and businesses. Now I am wary of looking for employment online.
