I responded to an ad on *** for a condo rental in *** *** ***. The first red flag should have been the amount of the rental. $700 for a month for a condo on the beach? Even in the month of May, it should have been way more. And that’s where I screwed up. I wanted to believe so bad this was real that I ignored all of the other red flags.

Like a phone that "only" receives texts and therefore did not actually talk to him. He didn’t have a way to process credit or debit cards to secure the reservation, so he insisted on *** or ***. I paid a deposit of $200 and 1/2 the agreed upon price as downpayment (not that unusual), the balance due upon check-in. Then he texts me and needs the balance before check-in due to some payments he needs to make to contractors that repaired some minor fire damage in the unit.

I bet you’re reading this and thinking, this guy is sooooo stupid. And I would agree with you.

He presented all of his "credentials" via email like a realtors license (which I am going to submit a complaint with Florida), a drivers license, and a business license. All fake. I should have checked on the realtors license. Florida has a nice website for doing so.

So in the end, we agreed to meet and he never showed up and quit responding to text messages. I even went up to the room and knocked. A nice man opened the door and confirmed he had the room rented for another day. My heart sunk. I knew I had been had.

Avoid the names *** *** ***, *** *** ***, or *** ***. At least online and the transaction is mostly anonymous. These may be names that the scammers pulled from a database and could be legitimate good folks.
