Type of a scam Tech Support

Pop up virus warning on my husband’s computer, while I was not at home. Looked like it was from Apple (had their logo). Instructed to call for help. My husband is not a native english speaker and slightly hard of hearing. Everyone he talked to spoke rapidly and had an accent. They told him that his computer had a virus and that they could fix it. He granted them remote access to his computer and they installed Sophos Anti Virus. They had access for close to an hour. Signed him up for what they said was an annual tech support contract and got him to write a check (told him to hold it up in front of the computer so they could take a picture of it). They called back a little later to see if the computer was working ok. I took the call and told them that we didn’t need or want the tech support and I requested that they not process the check for pmt. Got transferred to several different people – all very unpleasant. Said they provided a service, all calls were recorded and that non-payment would result in them ruining our credit score. I issued a stop payment on the echeck, and will have to change acct number/etc.
