I use monthly bill payer to pay my BGE bill. I received a text that I had an overdue bill. I knew the latest bill was paid 11/16 and the next one wasn’t due until 12/16. I contacted the number on my true e-mail and found my account was current, up to date and confirmed not due until 12/16.

I decided however to call the number on the text just to see what the hoax was. The dollar amount they noted in the text they sent was indeed the amount I was paying to BGE.

I called the number, which sounded extremely professional and well presented. It noted it was for BGE and the amount was "past due" it further stated the bill needed to be paid and would be processed via a provider named "Pay Menti" in addition to the amount past due there was a $1.50 service fee for using pay menti…all to sound and appear legitimate. Once it requested either a debit or credit card number I hung up.

Kids First Swim school Bowie, MD was called by someone identifying as BG&E. They indicated that our bill was 2 mos past due and the power would be turned off in 45 mins if it wasn’t paid. They weren’t authorized or able to pay so I was contacted. I called the number above and was told the same. When I asked for a copy of the bill be emailed me, I was told the power would be turned off within the hour.
