Total money lost $300

Type of a scam Tech Support

I was told my computer had a virus. This scammer sold me an AVG virus protection program for $300 in Feb. 2015. They took control of my computer…not sure they fixed anything. They called about 2-3 more times to take over my computer & fix it. I kept getting weird messages in pop ups: QWX (or QUWX) has quit working…plus other messages. I finally got suspicious in Oct. 2015 because when they called me my call somehow got transferred to American Squad & they wanted to sell me IP protection for $200. I said okay & then got more suspicious when the first scammer called me the next day & things started to not make sense. I got a receipt from American Squad in my email…it had a phone #, so I called it & got a plumbing company. I then called the real AVG & gave them the license # that I was sold….they told me it was invalid. I immediately went to my bank & cancelled all credit & debit cards & shut down my checking account. I filed a fraud report & got the $200 back. Boy did I learn my lesson! I had to have my computer reformatted & had to establish a new checking account & new credit & debit cards. What a nightmare! My local computer repair guy told me that the scammers would keep calling me….they did. I told them repeatedly to not call back & that I knew they were scammers…didn’t faze them. My computer guy told me to tell them that I no longer had this computer…that I had changed to a Mac (Mac cannot be remotely accessed). That solved the phone call issue. People beware & forewarned….don’t fall for this! The first scammer used my debit card to charge me, but the American Squad wanted to directly take the money from my checking account…like a check.
