Type of a scam Tech Support

A message popped up on the computer stating "your computer is being hacked, call (number) or you will lose everything. A family member of mine was distressed by this message, and called the number. This individual stated he was tech support from Microsoft and needed to remote into her computer. He also asked what kind of phone she had. He claimed her computer, phone, and iPad were linked. He tempted into her computer, and took payment over the phone. The payment was completed, the man wanted her to try to search on a website to make sure "the computer is working correctly." He even told her the coverage she had for her computer did not cover "this type of hacker." I got on the phone with *** *** and asked them for help, as she has coverage with them. They said they have had a lot of complaints about this type of scam. She told me to turn the computer off, and the hacker actually prevented me from moving the mouse. The man gave the name "Patrick, with an ext. 305." He also gave an alternate ext. For "Roy." This man was middle eastern, and actually argued with me over the phone when I got on the phone and caught on. These people are insane, and target the older population. We tried calling the "toll free number" back. Just keeps ringing.
