Type of a scam Employment

A friend sent me a message on LinkedIn about pretty much a secret shopper opportunity with a link to apply. Turns out his account was hacked. Chris Coleman emailed and texted me about accepting the application and then sent my first assignment. He sent a check for $2,998 with instructions to deposit it into my bank account and then later purchase two gifts cards, one for $2,000 and another for $600 from an apple store. I didn’t know my friends account was hacked until after I received this check, which I have not cashed. Chris continues to text me asking if I have started the assignment but I have not replied in a few days.
