Type of a scam Employment

I was e-mailed by the scammer about a mystery shopping position in which I was to be paid $300 after completing the mystery shopping and a report based on my experience. I was asked to fill out basic information such as name, address, and phone number then to provide 2 addresses for Wal-Marts in my area. Next, I was sent a check by priority mail for $2,950 in an envelope with nothing else from the scammer. The person continued to send me text messages insisting I cash the check with my bank and await further instructions to which I responded and told them I would not be going further and to stop contacting me. I believe they were trying to gain access to my bank account and/or that the check sent is fraudulent. The address on the check is also different from the address it was sent from.
