Type of a scam Credit Repair/Debt Relief

Today I received a call from someone saying she worked for ALC – "American Locating Company". She said she had a sealed envelop with a complaint and that I was to take down a case number, and call a separate phone number: 888-396-5033. She was very insistent and at first I thought it was a robo call.

I asked her what the complaint was about. She couldn’t tell me, as that information was in the sealed envelop on her desk and that she couldn’t open it.

I gave her permission to open the envelop and she said she couldn’t.

I asked her how she got my phone number – she said it was part of the complaint.

I asked her who the company was that was associated with the 888 number she gave me – she said she couldn’t say, as ALC works with a lot of companies across the US.

When I told her she had to see how this sounded fishy, and that there’s been a lot of stories in the news lately about scams that start with phone calls like this, she hung up on me.
