Type of a scam Fake Check/Money Order

I did not accept the offer. I didn’t even sign up for this program. I made no contact I just came to this website to check its credentials. It received an F. Today I received a letter and a check for $1985.00. It wants me to contact Kimberly Stroup their research analyst for complete instructions to do this survey. They didn’t get any money from me but I assume I would cash the check or deposit it and send them the difference after my "payment/fee". Of course it seems fishy. I am just trying to warn people.
