Type of a scam Employment

I was on Zip Recruiter and applied for a job. I received an email saying they wanted to interview me. The position was a work at home position doing customer service. I had done that type of work before and the pay was about right, so I decided to talk to them. It was an interview in google hangouts. I’ve had phone interviews and interviews over skype so I thought this is no big deal.

I was trying to speak with the company and only got voice mail. The company was real and it took several days to speak with a person. During that time I was speaking with somebody on Hangouts and going through the process. They sent me a check to set up my home office. About that time I spoke with a person at the company that was supposed to be hiring me. Turns out the job was fake.

I spoke with Zip Recruiter and they said it is a problem, fake ads, I asked if there was someway they could figure out the fake ads and block. them. They said they delete ads once they realize they are fake and it is an industry wide problem.

The job offer just didn’t seem "right" so I didn’t quit my job. What would happen if somebody does quit their job and winds up homeless or worse.

I don’t know where the fault lies, with me for falling for it or Zip Recruiter for promoting it (they are a business that survives on ads, they may not be interested in limiting sketchy ads).
